The Real Best Animated Film of 2008

Still from Sita Sings the Blues To hell with Wall-E and the Academy of Motion Pictures.

I saw Sita Sings the Blues last night at the Fargo Film Festival. It is among the best feature-length animation, no, among the best movies I’ve ever seen.

The best, most amazing, and most wonderful thing about this film is that it’s creator, Nina Paley, has released it under a Creative Commons license.

You can legally download and watch the film for free from a rapidly increasing number of sites. You can take pieces and make of them what you will.

Set aside 82 minutes this weekend and check it out.

An interesting note: while pre-downloaded DVDs aren’t available from the Sita store yet, you can get a hard drive signed by the artist and containing an uncompressed 1920 x 1080 pixel, 24 frame-per-second, 35mm film-quality original Quicktime file of the film. That is awesome.
