Anathem, etc.

Cover of _Anathem_ by Neal StephensonNeal Stephenson’s book Anathemcame out last September. I’m still working my way through it’s almost one thousand pages.

I strongly recommend the book if you like though-provoking fiction. It’s the type of fiction that Asimov and Clark wrote in the 1950s & ’60s, exploring the possible ramifications of then state-of-the-art research.

Anathem has inspired an album of music: Iolet. The composer, David Stutz, has blogged the creation process.

The compositions are really fascinating, in my humble opinion. They are musical expressions of mathematical theorems and proofs, in the form of monastic chants and throat singing. You can listen to most of the album at Mr. Stephenson’s.
