Damn Small Dungeons and Dragons, 4th Edition (DS4E, for short).

This project is inspired by Damn Small Linux, this project’s namesake, and Linux From Scratch, this project’s spirtual leader. This is initially a personal project, an experiment to see how little is needed to create a roleplaying game that “feels” like Dungeons & Dragons, suitable for quick pick-up games, scalable up to long-running campaigns, and without regard to genre.

I have several goals:

• Learn more about how the full-fledged 4th Edition works internally.
• Produce a working, very compact game system. You have just enough to create characters, present challenges, and resolve conflicts.
• Produce a flexible game system. New sub-systems, up to and including the official rules, can be easily added without breaking anything that isn’t already broken.
• Produce a “secure” game system. Anything beyond the core basics is added and tested by you, not Wizards of the Coast’s overworked and underpaid designers and developers.

I intend to license the output of this project under the Creative Commons Attribution (by) license, similar to the BSD license used by open-source software. I don’t intend to make money off this and want everyone to feel free to play with and contribute to the work.
