My Favorite… Cookies

I cooked up a batch of oatmeal cookies on Saturday. It was cookie cooking weather, for sure: sleety, windy, and cold.

I just used the classic oatmeal cookie recipe under the lid of the minute oatmeal except for one change: There Are No Raisins in My Oatmeal Cookies!

What is the deal with people putting extra junk in their oatmeal cookies? It destroys the simple purity of the cookie.

I’m convinced that no one actually likes raisins in their oatmeal cookies. It’s one of those things where you do something because you think you should, not because you actually like doing it. Seriously, if you try and tell me you prefer shriveled, rotten grapes in your oatmeal I won’t believe you and will question your mental stability. Since the arrival sub-dollar a pound purified sugar, has anyone honestly thought “you know what this recipe needs, more raisins!” I don’t think so.

I’ve had people try to make a case for other fruits, like currants, cranberries, or even—get this—orange essence. No. Those are also shriveled fruit. Elitist, more expensive shriveled fruit, but still shriveled fruit. And still completely unnecessary. You know what? There is already a recipe that includes all of these together. It’s called fruitcake. Keep your damn fruitcake away from my cookies!

I’ve had people try to make a case for chocolate chips or chunks in oatmeal cookies. You know what I say to that? Just make a chocolate chip cookie. Seriously. Why screw up your glorified chocolate delivery mechanism with something healthy like rolled oats?

(Also, take it easy on the nutmeg, or leave it out completely. Too much and you end up with fake pumpkin pie cookies. *gag*)
