Failure of Leadership
Here’s the problem with President Obama’s wishy-washy support of national health insurance that would compete with private insurance.
One, by giving even the appearance of political maneuvering or negotiating over this point, he is signaling a vast majority of the people who actually elected him—and the Democrats facing a campaign in three months—that the campaign promise that meant the most to them really wasn’t really a promise so much as a lie. This president who promised change and transparency didn’t really mean it. Regardless of everything else the president has done for those who elected him, he didn’t step up when it meant the most.
Two, by giving even the appearance of political maneuvering or negotiating over this point, he is in effect negotiating with the terrorists that literally are the Republic party. President Obama will be encouraging violence, lying, and fear-mongering as legitimate means of influencing national policy.
Corporations are not human beings. And even if they are considered equivalent, why should they receive free health care, aka corporate bailouts to financial firms, auto firms, airline firms, health industry firms, while real people go bankrupt, die, and otherwise have their lives ruined?
America voted for, I voted for President Obama because he promised to finally respect American and its people after a decade of indifference and lies. But failing to enact this safety net will destroy the President’s credibility, destroy all confidence in the ability of our government to be a positive force, and usher in an age of cynicism our country can’t afford if it wants to remain a world power.
