The Fargo Film Festival was great. Again. And the directors who were present loved Fargo and its people right back. Again. Oh, and the pre- and post-party ticket was totally worth it. Again. I love this city so much.

“An alternative reading of our recent military past might suggest the following: first, that the political utility of force—the range of political problems where force possesses real relevance—is actually quite narrow; second, that definitive victory of the sort that yields a formal surrender ceremony at Appomattox or on the deck of an American warship tends to be a rarity; third, that...

Pee-Wee Gets an iPad
So much awesomeness packed into two minutes.
Apple
The iPhone changed our culture.
The iPad is going to change it again. It is an amazing device and should not be underestimated.
If you do not understand that the iPad is an amazing, world changing device you need to study it until you do understand that and know how to beat it.
Three years later competitors are just coming up with ways to equal the iPhone and Apple bests their own leading...
New Orleans: the city that knows how to party.
Minneapolis: the city that knows how to suffer stoically, knowing that it is somehow their fault even though they have lived honest, Lutheran lives.
This is why I’ve stopped posting most anything even vaguely related to politics. Every time I try I devolve into sputtering about the incompetence of Congressional Democrats, the ambivalence towards the electorate by the Obama administration, and the evil of the Republicans.

Person of the Year
Here’s the thing: before the iPod Touch there was no good way to Google or Wikipedia whatever you wanted over dinner at a national chain or a local coffee house. Steve Jobs is largely responsible for the iPod Touch.
Seriously. Think about that.

After you’ve checked out the previously mentioned Holiday Sampler, head on over to the Mythos Market and check out their Unbearably Scary Solstice Combo.
Ah, who doesn’t love the holiday classics like “Freddy the Red Brained Mi-Go”, “Oh Come All Ye Olde Ones”, and—my personal favorite—“Silent Night, Blasphemous Night”.

The 2009 edition of the Suburban Sprawl Holiday Sampler has been unleashed. I think it’s the best yet.
If you’re not hip to the sampler, every year the Suburban Sprawl record label collects a bunch of holiday-themed songs and releases them as a free download. I’d call the mix subversive if anything can still be subversive in this era. Does “eclectic” still work?

If You Have a Kid but Are Not Keeping Up With...
Kid’s music, at it’s best, is as engaging and fun as adult music but directly engages age appropriate subjects. As great as The Clash’s music is, pre-teens shouldn’t have to understand the politics and music of the late 70s and early 80s to really get the music on the trip to daycare/school/grandma’s house.

Holiday Crackers
Should you find yourself in the cracker aisle this season wondering what is what, remember this: Town House are saltines added to butter, but Club are butter added to saltines.
Also: Ritz are cheap ripoffs of Town House.

Whiskey Mustard Sauce
I just had this with a big top butt steak, but this should be great with elk, moose, venison, etc. Also, this involves starting whiskey on fire, which is just awesome.

1 Tbsp olive oil
2 Tbsp (two small) finely chopped shallot
1/2 C whiskey
1 C broth
2 Tbsp whole-grain mustard
3 Tbsp unsalted butter
1/2 tsp cider vinegar
